2020 has decisively changed the way we collaborate and communicate. It has also accelerated the establishment of mobile working. Teams no longer sit in one office but are distributed across multiple locations, sometimes even worldwide.

Even now after COVID, the ways in which we collaborate will be different moving forward. In the context of SAFe®, that means “Remote PI-Planning” will become the new normal.

Read on for tips & tricks on how to successfully perform your PI-Planning remotely.

Event planning – 5 things you should consider:

Planning in advance

Be sure to plan the remote event ahead of time to ensure everything runs smoothly.

Breaks are important

Plan enough breaks for your colleagues. For many, it is very challenging to participate in video calls for two days using such a compact format.

Ensure technical infrastructure

Make sure you have a stable, technical infrastructure for the transmission and execution of the event.

Appropriate communication

Find suitable communication channels so that your teams can communicate with each other and no important information is lost.

Integrate a PI-Planning tool

Rely on suitable PI Planning software that supports you and your teams with their process.

PI-Planning with Agile Hive

Business Context & Product Vision

To allow an overview of all required tasks, Agile Hive offers customizable templates and checklists directly in Confluence. You can fill out the information needed by the participants so they’re prepared before attending the PI-Planning.

With one look at the dashboard, all event information is captured to provide full transparency.

Digital Breakout- & Program Boards

Plan iteration capacities, break down features into stories, estimate story points, and get an overview of how things work together in your team.

More importantly, each team must be able to identify and visualize dependencies with each other’s tasks and then work with the other teams to find solutions. This can all be done in one simple overview, including the correct hierarchical linking, and all of this without jumping from ticket to ticket!

Program Risks

Agile Hive’s risk management is based on ROAM (Resolved, Owned, Accepted, Mitigated) in alignment with SAFe®. The report shows all identified risks associated with a particular team based on probability and impact. “Treatments” are procedures that deal with the respective risks. Along with their status, these treatments are displayed with each risk. Treatments also have a direct effect on how likely something is to happen (residual probability) and impact (residual impact).

By the way, Agile Hive risk management focuses on teams and ARTs but is possible at all levels.

Program Roadmap

The Program Roadmaps offer the possibility to plan Agile Release Trains and PIs directly on the timeline on the program level – conveniently with drag&drop. Scheduling, moving, sorting, and defining time periods only takes a few mouse clicks. The PI and deadline details automatically adjust in the process and are mapped accordingly in the ticket.

The Program Roadmap helps make the PI-Planning the way it should be – the focus can be entirely on planning, and Agile Hive takes care of the rest.

“Agile Hive is a great solution for SAFe Implementation. As an SPC, it helped my team understand various aspects of SAFe. I was very nervous during my first PI-Planning, but Agile-Hive was the reason that eventually everything fell in place. Highly recommended.”
